Anderson, his wife Rebecca Moesta, Shawn Gordon & the folks at ProgRock Records, and a star studded line-up, better known as Roswell Six, are back with Terra Incognita: A Line in the Sand. Here, the story focuses on the generations long war between the continents, and musically things take on a heavier and more aggressive tone compared to the more progressive & symphonic sounds we heard on the first part. <br><br> Gone are James LaBrie, Erik Norlander, Lana Lane, John Payne, Gary Wehrkamp, Kurt Barabas, David Ragsdale, Martin Orford, Chris Brown, Chris Quirarte, and Mike Alvarez, replaced here by Frameshift's Henning Pauly (who plays all the instruments and produces), Steve Walsh from Kansas, Sass Jordan, Nick Storr from The Third Ending, Charlie Dominici, Arjen A. Lucassen, and Alex Froese from Frameshift. Returning for a second go around is the incomparable Michael Sadler, former lead singer and founder of Saga. Despite the major upheaval in the line-up and the reliance on some heavier sounds, this still sounds like a Roswell Six album, so chances are if you loved the first album, you'll dig this as well. <br><br> From a vocal perspective, there are some killer performances here. Walsh amazes on the crankin' "My Father's Son" and the crushing, symphonic opener "Barricade", both tunes also featuring some great riffs and keyboard work from Pauly. Storr and Sadler team up on the hard rock piece "Whirlwind", and mainstream rock singer Sass Jordan really turns some heads on the bluesy hard rock of "The Crown". She's not only beautiful, but she can also tear it up! Sadler gives one of the CDs most emotional and poignant performances on the lovely "Loyalty", a piano driven ballad that lets the singer remind us all how much of a talent he still is. One of the heaviest pieces on the album is the monster "When God Smiled On Us", a brusing metal track complete with massive riffage and a great vocal team up from Storr & Froese. Jordan returns again to give a heart wrenching turn on "Need", and Sadler gets all grandiose on us for the symphonic epic "Victory", a tune that will instantly appeal to all those Saga fans out there. Throw in a killer instrumental from Pauly called "Battleground", and you have a highly enjoyable concept album filled with plenty of metal, hard rock, and prog bombast. <br><br> OK, so it's safe to say that Roswell Six delivered another winner here, but the question is, how long do we have to wait for the next part? Time will tell I guess. Pierwsze efekty tego pomysBu usByszeli[my przed rokiem, kiedy na rynek wraz z pierwsz cz[ci ksi|kowej trylogii Terra Incognita wszedB wydany przez ProgRock Records kr|ek  Terra Incognita: Beyond The Horizon firmowany nazw Roswell Six. Teraz,  A Line In The Sand zbiega si w czasie z premier kolejnej cz[ci ksi|ki trylogii. My[l, |e ju| mo|na ostrzy sobie zby na ostatni album z tej serii, bo dwa pierwsze s naprawd niesamowite  cho istotnie ró|ni si midzy sob, je[li chodzi o nastrój na nich panujcy.<br><br> Sam Kevin J. Anderson, który bardzo aktywnie braB udziaB w projekcie (jest  wraz z |on Rebekk Moest  autorem tekstów, koproducentem, wspólnie z gBównym producentem Shawnem Gordonem dokonywaB doboru artystów) wyja[nia, |e tak muzyk wymusiBo skupienie si na innych, nowych wtkach jego bestsellerowskiej trylogii:  Pierwszy album opowiadaB o poszukiwaniach, odkrywaniu, odwa|nych poszukiwaczach przygód, podró|ujcych w nieznane. Ten kr|ek to inna cz[ historii Terra Incognita, z nowymi bohaterami  to mroczniejsza ba[D o nieustajcej wojnie pomidzy dwoma krainami: Tierra i Uruba. Jej motyw przewodni, nietolerancja religijna i bBdne koBo nienawi[ci, staje si tak samo wa|ne dla nas, jak i dla bohaterów opowie[ci, stajcych twarz w twarz z tragicznymi krucjatami . <br><br> Do peBnej muzycznej interpretacji tego tematu konieczne byBo skomponowanie ci|szej, ostrzejszej muzyki, która oddaBaby nastrój wojny i niepewno[ci. To zadanie powierzono Henningowi Pauly, znanemu z takich projektów, jak Frameshift czy Chain. Pauly, oprócz tego, |e jest samodzielnym autorem kompozycji, to jeszcze gra na (dosBownie!) wszystkich instrumentach. W chórkach [piewaj Arjen Lucassen (Ayeron), Juan Roos (Shadow s Mignon) i Henning Pauly. <br><br> Efekt koDcowy odbieram jak najbardziej pozytywnie. Album rozpoczyna si od mocnego uderzenia ( Barricade ze Stevem Walshem na wokalu), które mo|e budzi pewne skojarzenia z Dream Theater. Do[ ci|kie, energetycznie brzmienie towarzyszy nam zreszt bdzie przez znaczn cz[ pByty. Wszak  Terra Incognita: A Line In The Sand to relacja z owBadnitego wojn miasta, opis dziaBaD zbrojnych, prób przechytrzenia przeciwnika. Nie brakuje jednak tak|e momentów lirycznych, a nawet tematów miBosnych, jak choby  Loyalty , albo wspomniane  Need . <br><br> Prawie ka|dy utwór zawiera pewien element przebojowo[ci, tak, |e melodie graj w gBowie jeszcze dBugo po tym, jak pByta skoDczy gra. Znajdziemy te| interesujce symfonie wokalne: w  When God Smiled On Us (Nick Storr/Alex Froese) albo w koDcowym, patetycznym  Victory (Michael Sadler/Alex Froese oraz dodatkowo You N Joy Lindenholzhausen Choir).<br><br> Czy ten album jest lepszy od swojego poprzednika z zeszBego roku? Przede wszystkim jest inny: inny jest kompozytor, inni, poza Sadlerem, wokali[ci, a w koDcu inna jest opowie[, która wymusza inn muzyk. Trudno zatem porównywa te wydawnictwa. Tamto zawieraBo na pewno wicej peBnych rozmachu elementów epickich i symfonicznych, ale przecie| to nie [wiadczy o tym, |e byBo lepsze lub gorsze. Niech wystarczy zatem stwierdzenie, |e  Terra Incognita: A Line In The Sand to album bardzo dobry, o zró|nicowanej muzyce, nie tylko dla miBo[ników ci|szych progresywnych brzmieD. <br><br> </p> <div align="center"><img src="line1.gif" width="610" height="1" border="0"></div> <!------------------------------> <!------------------------------> <p class="norm"> <a name="dangerdog">Review by <b>Dangerdog.com</b></a><br> <br> Last year brought the first Terra Incognita project, the setting of Kevin Anderson's epic fantasy trilogy to music, produced by ProgRock Records and directed by Eric Norlander with a host of talented international prog musicians. The concept combining story with music for a twin crossover release of book and CD was as novel as the music was brilliant. You can read more, in greater detail, in last year's review. Suffice to say, it was quite the accomplishment and entertainment. <br><br> Again, for part two of the story, Anderson and ProgRock combine efforts for the release of A Line in the Sand. At the musical helm is Henning Pauly (Frameshift, Chain, Shadows Mignon). Vocals are by rock legends Steve Walsh (Kansas), Michael Sadler (ex-Saga), Sass Jordan (Album Rock's Female Vocalist of the Year), Alex Froese (Frameshift) and Nick Storr(The Third Ending), with guest appearances by Charlie Dominici, Juan Roos and Arjen A. Lucassen. As with the first CD, Anderson co-wrote all of the lyrics with his wife, Rebecca Moesta, and two of the songs, The Crown and Need, are co-written by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Janis Ian. The story of the second novel, The Map of All Things focuses on the devastating generations-long war between continents. <br><br> I could wax eloquent about the ambitious nature of the project, the sweeping epic arrangements, or the outstanding performances of the musicians, but I would be merely repeating many of my original comments for the first work, Beyond the Horizon. Nevertheless, I will add some additional comments. While the progressive rock is profound, yet fundamental, the tone quite often is heavier and more forceful. It seems that Pauly, understanding the context of continental conflict, offers a greater intensity with heavier and charging riffs from the guitars. Even the addition of Walsh and Sadler add an urgency to the music, with a deeper more raw effect. But this tone never subjugates the complexity, beauty, and melody of the arrangements. Roswell Six's A Line in the Sand is quite impressive and highly entertaining progressive rock, and a worthy follow-up to the first part of the Terra Incognita story.
